Bowls… Bigger, or better, or both?

  • Julie Ayton 38 Winchester St Salisbury, England, SP1 United Kingdom (map)

It’s tempting when trying to scale up on the wheel to bang on a bigger lump of clay and just go for it. But if attempting bigger pots isn’t going to result in more weight than beauty, throwing well requires more precise attention to technique as scale increases.

It’s a truism that a potter’s biggest work isn’t necessarily their best, and attending to the basics is arguably more important when aiming for bigger pots.

The bowl is a fundamental form, and in this workshop we’ll examine the principles and structure that underpin the process of forming beautiful bowls to ensure delightful curves and generous volume, regardless of scale. The aim of the day is to improve technique and confidence in tackling that increasing weight of clay, whatever your starting point.

Suitable for improvers and experienced throwers.

Limited to five places for plenty of individual attention.

£122 (plus firing fees by finished weight).
